Bellerby beats the Boys!

Opening the days racing on a surprisingly sunny Sunday morning at Knockhill Racing Circuit in Scotland, the Junior Swifts took to the grid for the first time since Lydden Hill back in March. Guaranteed to provide close and exciting racing, today was no exception.

All were side by side off the line and into the first corner with nothing to choose between them. As they rounded the final corner to complete the first lap, Charlie Bean took the lead closely pursued by the rest of the field.  As the race neared its conclusion, Jake Taylor broke clear of Paige Bellerby in their scrap for second and closed up to Bean.   As the chequered flag dropped, Bean just held off Taylor for the win, followed by Bellerby and the ever improving Jennie Hawkes out in her second ever race.

Bean again took the lead in the second heat with his opponents in hot pursuit.  With heats reduced to 3 laps due to incidents during the day, the youngster held position to the line with Taylor, Bellerby and Hawkes chasing.

Confidence was growing for new boy Jake Taylor by heat three, who like Jennie Hawkes was also experiencing this challenging Scottish Circuit for the first time. Taylor gave good chase to Bean and attempting a move for the lead ran wide which is all Bellerby needed to slip up the inside and gain the position.  Back on the pace Taylor regained the place, providing great entertainment for the spectators.  Bean took the win followed by Taylor and Bellerby.

As the lights went green for the final, it was three abreast into the first corner. As the field re-emerged from the final corner, the top three were all as one with Bean out front with Bellerby and Taylor close behind, as the two went side-by-side into the first corner, Taylor made his move round the outside stick to then fill the mirrors of Bean for the following lap.  On entry to the gravel section Taylor saw his chance up the inside and took the lead.   With a clear track ahead and in search of his first chequered flag, surprise struck as a red flag appeared to call an end to the race after Bean running wide on the gravel section suffered a roll.

Bean emerged from the upturned car unscathed and with the car returned to the paddock, crews jumped in to get the car back in shape when it was declared the race would be rerun.  As the restart  commenced further issues with Bean’s car resulted in him pulling off, leaving Taylor followed by Bellerby and Hawkes to fight it out for overall honours. Bellerby kept Taylor in check for the lead and with experience showing through, waited for the final corner to make her move up the inside to take the lead and the chequered flag.

A thrilled Jennie Hawkes grabbed a fantastic and well deserved third and her first podium finish in the Junior Swift Championship.

Bellerby heads to the next round at Pembrey leading the Championship, two points clear of Bean and with only three points separating Bean and Taylor there will be all to play for at the Welsh circuit on 27th July 2014.
