Ovenden On Track for Title at Croft

In another hotly contested season of Suzuki Swift action, with one event still to run Tristan Ovenden did just enough at Croft Circuit, Yorkshire to seal the Swift crown for the first time. Ovenden was fastest in two of the three heats to claim pole position for the final. He made the best start in the run to the first corner and led 2013 champion Graham Rodemark for the entire race to claim the title. Jack Brown climbed to third at the start of the final but was passed by 2012 champion Chris Mullen at the start of lap two. Mullen pushed hard throughout the race but couldn’t do anything to move up to second by the finish, he finished third with Brown in fourth. Darren Scott finished fifth in the final ahead of Rob Maynard, despite carrying engine problems throughout the day, whilst it was a puncture that forced a retirement for Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher.

Tristan Ovenden takes the win at Croft Circuit

“It was really close again at Croft as it has been all year, especially with Graham [Rodemark] and Chris [Mullen]. To lead the final from start to finish was great.  I have been anxious about racing all week.  To be a rallycross champion was a childhood dream for me and to think I have actually achieved it is beyond words" beamed Ovenden.

In the fifteen-strong Suzuki Swift field, all branded with new Championship sponsor, Vehicle Cleaning and Additive Manufacturer Power Maxed, it was Dave Ellis who took the win in the B final less than a second ahead Nathen Heathcote.  Former World Touring Car Championship driver Harry Vaulkhard made his rallycross debut in a Peter Gwynne Motorsport run Swift and finished third, with Mitchel Flaherty finishing fourth in his second ever Swift event, driving Monster Energy Athlete Liam Doran’s familiar green Swift. Liam’s father Pat, a multiple British Rallycross Champion himself, raced a Swift at Croft but couldn’t show the sort of form he has shown in the category previously when he took the win at Mallory Park. He finished fifth in the B final. Also running with the PGM Motorsport team, Adam Weaver, the man behind British Touring Car Championship entry Power Maxed Racing, showed good pace on his debut.

Whilst Ovenden is there with the points to the title, the celebrations do not start until post season eligibility checks have been completed after the final round and the results are declared final.

MSA Swift Junior Championship

The Junior Swifts final was won by Drew Bellerby, who is now level points with Charlie Bean heading into the last round of the championship at Blyton next month. Bean had led the final but got sideways coming out of the chicane onto the loose section on the last lap leaving PGM Motorsport driver Jake Taylor nowhere to do. The pair collided, allowing Bellerby into the lead. Taylor got his Swift going to finish second and the ever-improving Jennie Hawkes came home third to complete the podium.

MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix

Just a day later, Croft played host of the famous MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix, which was won by the Supercar of British Champion Julian Godfrey. With all the saloon rallycross classes mixed together, the Swifts showed their speed, nine taking part in the event. Ovenden put in another star performance, qualifying 11th and just missing out of a place in the A final. Running against far more powerful cars in the B final, Ovenden came home third. Sadly for Jack Brown, he rolled his Swift in the B final. Kelvin Fletcher was also unlucky to be involved in an incident that damaged his car in the first corner, before hitting the tyre wall. Drew Bellerby made her senior rallycross debut in the PGM Motorsport run Swift driven by Weaver on the previous day and impressed, chasing Pat Doran in the third heat.

The Swift Championships join the BTDRA Rallycross Championship at Blyton Park for their final round of the Championships on Sunday 30th November where another bumper entry is expected.
