Swift Rallycross Championships

Seven Rounds - Six Winners!

The crowds did not have to wait long at the Welsh circuit near Llanelli for the action to start in the Swift Rallycross Championships on Sunday.   With Pembrey not featuring in the calendar the previous year, a number of the swift drivers had not experienced this track previously.   It was the first corner of this damp circuit that claimed its first victims Rallycross Academy’s Rory Denning and Chris Mullen as the six strong grid tussled for position.  Graham Rodemark took the lead in the second grid however it was short-lived when a broken Cam chain brought his 2012 title bid to a close.  Canterbury driver Tristan Ovenden took the win for heat one with championship leader Johny Bean who developed a misfire took fourth.

The title chasing teams of Mullen Motorsport  and CJB Motorsport had their work cut in order to get their cars race fit for second heats.  CJB crew had the cam from fellow competitor Graham Rodemark’s Swift engine to keep him out on track and with Chris  holding second position in the championship it was vital he got times in the two remaining heats to make it through to the final.

A jumpstart in the second heats from Tony Lynch did not help his title fight seeing him pushed to the back of the grid for the restart.  Sittingbourne driver Darren Scott, also a front runner in the championship, led his race all the way to the flag.  Mullen returned on a mission straight back on the pace to take the heat win.

Lynch’s luck did not improve in the third heats where a challenge with Scott saw him spin.  Team Geriatric got the Lucas Oils Swift repaired ready for the A final where Tony lined up fifth on the grid from his previous heat times.  Mullen took the win and Fastest time of the day in the third heats, followed by Tristan Ovenden and Darren Scott.

The announcement of a ten car A final certainly got the drivers adrenaline pumping, with Mullen in pole position, Ovenden taking his familiar spot in the middle and Scott on the outside of the front row.  James Knight-Coney and Tony Lynch took the next row followed by Oliver Thomas, Bean, Paige Bellerby and Denning and Muldoon completing the grid.

Ovenden got a good start and made the corner first with Mullen tucked in behind and they made it clear to start to pull away from the pack.  James Knight-Coney followed along with Paige Bellerby and Lynch behind her.  Bean despite running on three cylinders kept with them and Bellerby not buckling under the pressure of Lynch managed to hold onto fourth position.  A critical error by Lynch who was looking for his way past the 16 year old northern lass left the door open for current leader Bean to slip by giving away an essential extra point.  Ovenden took the chequered flag making it the sixth driver in seven rounds to take a win.  Second for Mullen gives him a 5 point lead above Bean with all to play for at the final round at Croft Circuit - 27th October.

Swift Junior Rallycross Championships

James ‘JJ’ Ross set about securing the MSA Junior Rallycross title in his normal calm manner.  The juniors also had fun at the first corner when CJB Motorsport junior Charlie Bean found the back of the Ramsport Swift of Mathew Thomas an error previously made by Thomas in practice. JJ ahead of the incident had a clear run to the flag followed by Bean and Thomas.

Ross continued with his smooth driving style to take the win and fastest time of the day in the second heat with another second place for the Snigwig Swift of Bean.

Third heats saw a change of order when Thomas saw his opportunity to pass Ross and take the win.  Ross did not make the same mistake in the final and led all the way to the line to take the win and Champion status.  Bean was holding second before drifting wide and finding himself bogged down on the outside of the circuit before Honda Curve.  Thomas took second, placing him just one point behind Bean in the battle for second in the championship heading into the final round.
